Brain Drain, Baguette Gain
Dispatches from a life reclaimed. I bridge the practical and the poetic, following the code for Paris, to help Black women navigate the transition from burnout to beauty in the City of Light, guided by the timeless principles of the Paris code.
The American Dream vs. The French Reality
Whew, chile. Since pivoting back to California part-time to be near my family, I am daily reminded that the United States can feel like a trailer park with an MCM belt.
From the 24-hour cycle of exhausting headlines to the "aggressively casual" culture, I often find myself clutching my passport and asking: Was the pivot back a mistake? After eleven years in Paris, the contrast isn’t just jarring. It’s biological. While I missed my family and the soul of my Black Americanness, I’ve realized that the "Soft Life" in the States requires a level of combat that France simply doesn’t demand.
If you are weighing the "American Dream" against a French reclamation, here is the real tea on the cultural divide.
A Strategic Soft Landing: Moving to Paris with Intention
Most Black women spend years organizing everyone else’s life (work, family, community) and rarely get the space to architect their own. When you finally start considering a move abroad, the focus must shift. Preparation is no longer just a task; it is the foundation of your future sovereignty.
Everything depends on how you prepare. Paris has a way of highlighting whatever isn’t aligned, so it is vital to get yourself in order before the transition becomes a source of stress. A Soft Landing requires deep intention and depends on five specific pillars. When even one is overlooked, the entire move feels heavier than it needs to be.
Black Women Deserve Options: France is Full of Them
In the current political climate, exploration is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity. For Black women, the choice to live abroad is an act of stepping into a world where your possibilities expand and your presence is celebrated.
While I’ve spoken before about the intangible magic of Paris, today we discuss the infrastructure of ease. Living well is not just about the view; it is about living in a system that honors your humanity. Here is how France offers the "Soft Landing" you deserve.
